error on bootup.... service.exe

When I boot up Windows XP Home version, I get an error
that says...

Service.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.

I have run antivirus, spy bot, etc and nothing fixes it

Any ideas?
 
When do you get this error, does it prevent you from getting to the desktop
or does the error appear when you get to the desktop and are you able to
keep running after you get the error?
