Error Msg: An invalid entry id was passed.

Aftering synching an iPhone, when accessing an Outlook 2003 Contact with
Business Contacts Manager installed, the following error message was received:

The properties dialog box could not be displayed. An invalid ENTRY ID was
passed.

Does anyone know how to fix this error? Someone posted this work-around in
another forum but I am hoping there is a simpler fix.

I had this problem too. Here's what I had to do:

1. Right click on the contact in the contacts folder and choose "Send Full
Contact" / "In Internet Format (vCard)"

2. This will bring up an E-mail message. Drag and drop the vcard from the
attachments to your desktop. Close the E-mail message.

3. Delete the contact from your contacts.

4. Repeat steps 1-3 for all contacts which are bad.

5. Shut down outlook.

6. Bring outlook back up again.

7. Drag and drop all of the vCards you saved on your desktop into the
contacts folder.

8. Shut down outlook and bring it back up again.

Everything should be okay now.

Very frustrating! I know. I'm wondering if there is a syncing issue between
the iPhone and Outlook. It seems that many of my problem contacts came
originally from the iPhone - but not all? So I haven't figured out the
pattern yet.

It's Martin formerly with Venali. This wasn't the answer I was looking for.
It sounds like my friend's Outlook or Outlook .pst is corrupted so I was
hoping you MS Outlook MVPs could steer me in the right direction. I don't
think calling Apple will resolve this. It took them 3 months to get their
sync working with "my" pst file. My friend has Outloook 2003 with BCM, and he
is getting this error.

Any additional thoughts?

Unfortunately, there is nothing that can be done from the Outlook end of
things about this. The error message means that the sync process has left
the electronic addresses unresolved, which is the fault of the sync software
not Outlook. You can certainly try to repair the PST file with the Inbox
Repair Tool, but the problem will arise again with each sync. Someone needs
to address the problem with the sync software I'm afraid.

Just an idle question.....

Do you know with certainty that the sync software supports "Outlook 2003
with BCM" versus just plain "Outlook"? Contact info is stored differently
when BCM is in play and BCM contact data is stored differently in different
Outlook versions if memory serves me correctly. Would check that first
before making any assumptions related to a corrupt PST file since BCM
contact data is actually stored in a database outside of the PST (using its
own pre-defined and unchangeable custom message class for display purposes).

One other thought: You might contact the folks at Contact Genie who may have
a solution for the ways syncing can mangle Contacts, or Karl might post
here. They seem to know the most about why this happens.

The failt is the Outlook 2003. I don't konw what it is and I can not
find a way to fix it. But, if you switch your sync to Windows Address
Book it will work fine. It's obviously 2003 Outlook. So there is
your work around.

What do you mean by "switch your sync to Windows Address Book"? Outlook has
no such feature.

I'm getting the same error. Clearly there is a field not being passed
back to Outlook when the iphone does the sync. One way to solve it is
to export all your contacts to a file (any filetype will do). Delete
your contacts in Outlook or move them into a new temporary folder.
Then import the contacts from the file into your original contacts
folder. They will be imported correctly. This helps with a one-time
fix but I suppose they will keep getting corrupted by iphone. I wish
Apple would come out with a fix for this, but I haven't seen any
traffic on the iphone support for Apple regarding this issue.

Too easy. I had this same problem and couldn't seem to find a
straight, or easy answer.

Go to the pull down menu in Outlook. Select "Go" "Contacts". I made
sure that the Address Cards button was selected. From there I could
see all my invalid (blank) address cards. I simply deleted all of
those and the invalid entry IDs are gone!

It is totally unacceptable that importing and exporting contacts is not
properly supported in Outlook and I suggest that many will be moving to open
source and compatible alternatives..

What program was used to perform the "sync" - Outlook or something else?
(this is a rhetorical question since the answer is not Outlook). Ergo, why
is Outlook the culprit when it was another program that generated the data
and likely caused the problem? Perhaps directing the frustration at the
vendor of the actual product that performs the sync and ask them why an
invalid Entry ID exists may prove more beneficial. In this case, Outlook is
merely using the data that has been created for it via an external process
and reporting any error(s) found - it is highly unlikely that it is the
"source" of the problem for any newly created data.

I found if i opened up a contact that was giving me the error, saved
it with a slight addition e.g. an extra letter "Z" at the end of thier
name, then re-opened it, re-saved it without the extra "Z" the error
dissapoeared.
Hope this helps oters as it worked for me.
