Have attempted update to Windows Defender. It tells me it is successful. I am
able to run a scan.
When trying to upgrade definitions error msg 'windows defender was unable to
complete the update 0x80240030'
I have attempted to uninstall but it tells me that my doing so I may affect
other programmes, so have not done so!
Suggestions would be appreciated.

I am experiencing this problem as well.
Up until today it was working properly, when I started my computer this
morning I noticed the program required my attention so I maximized it. The
program had a message telling me I needed to download a new version of it and
supplied me with a link to do this, so I clicked the link on the program to
update it which took me to this page
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/default.mspx.
At this site I downloaded the beta from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx. After
I had downloaded the beat I installed it on top of the previous version on my
computer. The last part of the installation had check box, the check box left
checked as it was would ensure that the program would check for updates and
perform a quick scan of my computer after I pressed the finish button. I left
the check box checked and the program was checking for updates when the same
error as caroron came up, 'windows defender was unable to complete the update
0x80240030'.
I then maximized the program that has a button which when clicked checks for
updates, so I clicked this button and I received the same error again. Below
the button is a link to troubleshoot, I clicked the link which took me to
this page http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=915105. I followed these
troubleshooting steps but it did not solve the problem. So I came to this
community and found this topic, I tried the solution above but when I tried
to install the program from here http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=915170 I
was told by windows ‘Another version of this product is already installed.
Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the
existing version of this product, use Add/Remove Programs on the Control
Panel.’

Hi Engel

I have attempted this fix but came up with the same result as Kindred
'Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this
version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this
product, use add/remove programs on the Control Panel'
I cannot readily see a BITs programme within the control panel.
What next ?

Hi Caro and Kindred,

Donload and Install, Windows Installer 3.1 v2 (3.1.4000.2435) is available
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893803

D/L and install Ccleaner -
http://www.ccleaner.com
http://forum.ccleaner.com/index.php?showtopic=1504
Note, uncheck Yahoos toolbar during install.

Open Ccleaner and start the cleaning, press "Windows" "Aplications" and "Run
Cleaner" from the menu choose 'Issues' and then press scan for issues, Repair
any fºund.
Run twice Ccleaner, the same as above, until you get “0 bytes to be removedâ€.

D/L and install Beta 1
From http://www.filehippo.com Beta 1
http://www.filehippo.com/download/88f7471049179318fa98d78e1df25a33/download/

Is pretty risky getting a Microsoft file except directly from the
source--but in an emergency....

Rebººt

REMOVING BETA 1
Whatever you do, (installing and updateting or unistalling) always as a
administrator.

This needs to be run in safe mode.

Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel. Click Microsoft AntiSpyware and
click Change. Click Next, and then click Remove.

In Windows Programs files, delete all the sub-directorys and the folder MSAS.

Delete in Windows\system 32 :
GcColetion.dll
Hashlib.dll
GcUnCompress.dll
GcTypLibA.tbl
GcAntiSpywareLib.dll
GcUserData.gcg

In Windows\Downloaded Installations, delete any reference about MSAS 1.

You can use Ccleaner
Run the above remover in safe mode Ccleaner on all 3 settings(windows, apps &
issues) and clear anything found reboot and see if it still exists.
Run twice Ccleaner, the same as above, until you get “0 bytes to be removedâ€.
Special wiht the Issues.

Done.

Rebººt

WINDOWS DEFENDER BETA 2.
I'd recommend re-downloading, and saving to a known location--like the
desktop.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...e7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&DisplayLang=en
After the download is complete, disable real-time protection by your
antivirus for long enough to do the installation. This may be worth trying in
your case.
I hope this post is helpful, let us know how it works ºut.
