error messages won't stop

I keep receiving an error message that says "Automatic Updates has
encountered a problem and needs to close........." If I do the recommended
fix, there is no change. When I close the Microsoft error box, the system
locks up. I can keep the computer usable if I don't do anything with the
error message (leave the box open). Each time, after about 2 minutes of
normalcy, something starts running in the background, virtually stopping the
computer's function. Then another identical error message is generated. I
have turned off Automatic Updates but no change.

I am watching the CPU Usage and nothing seems to be hogging resources when
this background program runs.

Any advice? Thanks! J

You cannot install some updates or programs
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822798&Product=winxp

Open Windows Explorer and locate these paths:
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution = Delete all Folders in the Right
Pane/Window (like download,updates..etc.)
Then this path:
C:\Windows\Temp\Temporary InternetFiles\IE.5Content = Delete all here.

Run Disk Cleanup and Defrag in safe mode.
Open a run command and type in:
sfc /scannow click [OK] let it run then Reboot into Safe Mode and Defrag
your system.

2... Secondly, try to clean up your caches, Internet files and delete cookies
by doing this:
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Taps:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced
Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.
Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.
For Malware download both these software:
http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
http://www.safer-networking.org ; for Spybot S&D
Go to the windows update site and download and install the updates
recommended as High periorty.

Nass - Thanks for your helpful reply. I tried everything you suggested and
had partial success--some things just wouldn't work. I did the spybot and
ad-aware but, even though they found some junk, the problem continues. Any
other suggestions? I'm at a loss.

Thanks again, J

If you don't get a resolution here I recommend you post to the experts in
the Windows Update newsgroup and provide more details such as what is the
"recommended fix" that does not work. What is the exact text in the error
box, etc.

Hi J,
What the things didn't work?, did you have trouble deleting some sub-folders
in Normal Mode, try in Safe Mode.
Run a scan for Viruses with your Anti-Virus Application if you have, if you
don't try and download the AVG and install it then run a scan, and also run a
scan on-line even if you have an Anti-Virus.
Download the free AVG and run a scan:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5

Run a scan from here on-line:
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx
Download Avast Cleaner from here:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-virus-cleaner.html
Lots of tools to download and disinfect your machine:
http://www.bitdefender.co.uk/site/Downloads/browseFreeRemovalTool/

Try to Repair your Windows Update Engine, to do that follow these steps to
reregister the DLLs by opening a Run Command and type these Commands
one-by-one and click [Enter] or [OK]:
regsvr32 atl.dll
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 inetcomm.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
regsvr32 cryptsvc.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
net start wuauserv
You copy and paste the above into a Notepad and save to your Desktop as
re.bat, then open a run command and type in:
C:\reg.bat click [OK] then Yes for the DLLs to re-register.

There you will see three Options/Folders:

By clicking on each and look in the Right Pane/Window you will see a report
