It could mean their server is down. You can call them and ask if their
email server is down.

It can also mean that you need these instructions to set up correctly:

<http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org/adding_an_email_account_to_outlook_Express.htm>

They were written for Outlook Express, but should also work under
Windows Mail.

I starting receiving ths message yesterday AFTER I installed VISTA SP1. I
have the same problem with Windows Mail and Outlook!

My ISP is ATT (Worldnet). I can send emails to myself on ATT, but not to
other ISP's.

If it's exactly the same error message, watch for answers to her message.
If not, click on yours and copy it to your next message so we can check
for differences in your problem.

Also, what if any antivirus programs do you have?

Error message is same except for ISP name and port. I use ESET NOD32
anti-virus. I turned off email checking, but that didn't help.

This is my exact error message:
Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Subject 'Re: Looking forward to saturday nite(Passover)',
Account: 'Sam's ATT', Server: 'imailhost.worldnet.att.net', Protocol: SMTP,
Port: 465, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

I have another machine running XP and the email works fine. Just the Vista
machine after I installed SP1 (Sunday night.)

You might look here for a set of instructions to check your setup against:

http://helpme.att.net/article.php?item=10918

Also, I think I've read that there's a version of the ESET NOD32
antivirus program that tends to cause problems in Windows Mail;
unfortunately, I don't remember anything about which version.
That's why we no longer recommend it for business use where you
don't qualify for free use of the antivirus programs we usually
recommend.

I cannot access that webpage from ATT, but I have checked all my settings
several times. The ESET version I use is compatible with VISTA and has run
fine for the past several months until I updated to SP1. I turned it off, but
the problem still persists.

Solved my problem. It was Web Root's Spy Sweeper program. When I disabled
their Email Attachment shield, I can once again emails. I have sent them a
note. Appears to be a conflict with VISTA sp1.

That webpage from ATT is slow to respond.

Problems caused by antivirus programs in Windows Mail often take
months to appear, and once they appear, usually stay even if you turn
off the antivirus program but don't uninstall it.

You can sometimes get a temporary fix by removing your mail account
under Windows Mail, then restarting Windows Mail and adding the
account again.
