Windows mail suddenly stopped working

Windows mail has this error message when I try to connect.

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Account: 'mail.virgin.net ', Server: 'mail.virgin.net', Protocol:
POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

I know the server is working ok as I am online. Have checked the
propertieson the account & cannot find anything wrong. Also checked my
firewall. Help please

I am having similar issues, error message is somewhat different (see below),
although I have also had the one you show below. I am very frustrated!! I
have never had issues before. I have uninstalled IE8 and thought that would
correct my problem, but it has not.
Somebody please help : }

Server: 'mail.airstreamcomm.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Duke, your issue was responded to in your thread "Mail Problems".
Please don't post the same issue in multiple threads because that just
confuses things and dilutes available responder time.

I don't think that server supports the SSL option.
Go to Tools, Accounts, select that account, Properties, Advanced,
then uncheck the SSL option.
