I recieve the following error message at startup: <windows
root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt. how do i get this file
reinstalled without wiping out my hard drive..i have a lot of pictures on
this drive that i have not copied to a cd yet..any help would be greatly
appreciated

boot from the Windows CD, and after loading some basic drivers etc. you
should see a screen that says press enter to install windows or R to
enter the recovery console. Press R

after another minute or 2 depending on the speedof the machine, you
will see an option to select which OS you want to boot into, as long as
you only have one on there, your entry will be 1.

after that, all you have to do is copy ntoskrnl.exe over from the
windows install disk.

copy D:\i386\system32\ntoskrnl.exe C:\Windows\System32\ntoskrnl.exe

it will warn you about overwriting the file, that is ok.. also you may
want to double check where ntoskrnl.exe is on the CD, before running
the command, as I am not 100% sure.

Youshould at least get the idea.

I have tried reinstalling with floppies that i created from the microsoft
site, i install the first disk and it is fine then on the 2nd disk it tells
me that the file \ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded setup cannot continue
Am i at a point where i have to scrub the hard drive and start over?

So what about the Windows CD and not floppies?

Even if you were near the point of reformatting, you could pick up a
$10 2.5" HD enclosure from Newegg.com, throw your drive in it, and plug
it into any other system to recover your files.. then you could put it
back and reformat
