Error Message - "No More Files"

G

Guest

When I Right-click on my Desktop and select New - Folder from the menu, I
get the following error message:

"Unable to create folder

Unable to create the folder 'New Folder'

There are no more files."

(Here is a link to an image of the error box:
http://home.comcast.net/~j_younger/Error_Message.JPG )

The same thing happens when I try to create a new txt message, a new bmp
image, etc., only instead of "folder," the error message says "file." This
is only happening on the Desktop... I can create new folders and text files
inside of other folders.

If anyone can help me on this, I would be much obliged.

Maybe the path contains too many characters.

Hi Wes,

Thanks for posting Q306357. I've been looking for info regarding that issue in XP. Though the article was written for WinME, the underlying cause is now clear.

Would have to be one heck of a profile name, though wouldn't it?

And it seemed to work before from the tone of his post.

I thought perhaps he had run into some hithero unknown "files open"
issue--kinda of like in the old config.sys days where you would modify the
files= setting.

Or perhaps something has modified his config.nt file with an abnormally
small files= command?

Wes,

Yup. I once came across this question at experts-exchange.com where I post sometimes, and could not find any solution for this issue. The questioner said that he could create a "New folder" anywhere except in the Desktop (from a open/save as box)

Yes, or perhaps any other chipset may. Other possibility that I can think of is a WU Hotfix causing this (?)

Wesley,
I have the same 'no more files' problem that Jason reported on 1/18/2005. I
have been working very diligently trying to solve this problem for the past
24 hours. You can understand my joy at finding this thread. It appears you
found a solution to this problem i.e. "missing OfflineCache\index.dat". Can
you tell me how to fix the problem?
It sounds like I have to replace/recreate/? this file but I'm not sure how
to do that.
Any help would be highly appreciated. Also, I did a search for "Q306357" and
didn't get any hits. Is that a private article/document?
Thanks,
Keith

Keith,

Your joy may be short lived.

OfflineCache\index.dat is for another problem. Specifically System
Information (msinfo32.exe) opening in Help and Support. Not really related
to this thread.

I have no idea how to fix your problem.

Does your machine have an Intel 815EM/830M chip set??

[[WORKAROUND

Why was the Q dropped from the article number?
The Q was arbitrary and MS has simplified it's Knowledge Base (KB).

When you search for an MS Knowledge Base Article on Google, etc., use
KB306357.

When you search for an MS Knowledge Base Article @

Search the Support Knowledge Base (KB)

use only the last six digits. I.e. 306357.

Wesley,
Oh well... I tried. Thanks for the timely response. No, my machine
does not have the Intel 815EM/830M chip set as far as I know.
The workaround will keep me limping along. I tried a registry update from
www.kellys-korner-xp.com-xp_tweaks.htm (number 153) but that didn't help
either.
Thanks for the information about the Knowledge Base numbering system.
If you think of anything re: the NEW file creation problem please let me know.
Thanks

Thank you for your suggestion to aquire ShellExView. It is an impressive
tool. Unfortunately I haven't been able to solve my problem by disabling
differnet sets of shell extensions. My problem continues.
Do you know of any tool that would allow me to 'trace' the system calls when
I perform the NEW files operation? I have never needed to get into the guts
of Windows like I have in other OSs so I am not that familiar with system
level tools. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Keith

I also have this error, and i believe it may be due to a missing fil

hidden file or two :blush:ops: ... if someone could post a list of thei

this

I tried the above tactic, and now everything is fine

A frind of mine has exactly the same problem as Jason, he had delete
alot of files from the root of C: dirve, including boot.ini... so hi
windows would not start... It's fixed now but we have this "no mor
files" problem with the desktop

Other things we have done is run a pest scan which removed alot o
files and registry settings, disabled some browser helper objets an
we installed sp2. We're not sure when the problem developed though
it seems the missing files on C:\ may be the cause

tony.tammaro, could you post the names of the files you put back o
C:\? Cheer

Hi, i've had that same problem with my desktop... Here is m
solution
If anyone has installed imesh....well remove it from your startup
start>>run>>msconfig... then goto the startup tab an
uncheck imesh
Ive tested this by removing it from my startup and putting it bac
again
If i put it back, error comes back. Looks like it is only caused whe
imesh is loaded from startup. If anyone finds this usefull or hav
problems please mail me at
