Error message: msmpeng.exe

Periodically, I get an error message on my screen that says: MsMpEng.exe - No
Disk : There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive A:.
Even if a disk is in Drive A this message has popped up. If there is no disk
in Drive A , It doesn't go away until I put a disk in and click 'retry'. If
there is already a disk in the drive, I can click cancel, retry or
continue--it reads the disk and then goes away--doesn't make any difference
what disk I put in there, just so long as there is something in there to
read. I have gone through everything in Defender to see if there is
something marked for it to always check Drive A and can't locate anything. I
googled msmpeng.exe and everything pointed to Defender, but no solutions. If
no one knows of a certain fix, then I will uninstall and reinstall and see if
that works.

I don't know of a fix for this, or a workaround other than providing a
floppy in drive A. I've described this one for Microsoft, so I believe they
are aware of it--as a data point--can you say what version of Windows you
are seeing this on?

I have the exact same problem as discribed below. I'm running Windows 2000
Pro.
SP4 with all the Latest MS Hotfixes.

Bill,
I, too, am running Win2K, SP4 with all updates/hotfixes, etc applied. I
also run Spybot and Trend Micro Anti Virus. I have another machine, also
W2K, SP4 with all updates that does not appear to have this problem. All
updates are automatically downloaded and installed daily.
Today, when I came home, the message is on my screen and it won't go
away--even putting a floppy in and clicking cancel, try again or continue
does not help. It hates me! :)
I'm uninstalling and reinstalling and see if that helps. If not, I'll just
uninstall until MS makes it better and works out some more bugs.
Thank you! And I'll post the uninstall/reinstall results--it may take a day
or 2 because this doesn't happen regularly.

Here's another goodie to go along with the other post. I opened WD to see if
there was a way to stop the search of the A drive and it started running a
scan at noon and it is now 18:35. It is stuck on
C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\MSIMN.EXE
I don't know if this has anything to do with it or not, but I don't use
OE--and I have removed it through the Control Panel 'Remove Windows
Components.'--but then when MS issues an update for OE--if I don't catch it
and stop it from updating that (which I usually don't since my updates are
automatic), then it puts OE back out there on my launch pad.

Miro, you might try uninstalling WD, reboot and then reinstall. See if that
eliminates the problem. I have done this, but it will be a couple of days
probably before I feel comfortable saying that is a good fix.

Uninstalling and reinstalling did not stop the error. So WD comes off my
system until MS releases another version.
Also, I opened WD again and it started scanning at Midnight and is still
running 9.5 hours later--stuck on another OE file.

You may be seeing more than one bug--the A drive thing is one, whatever is
causing it to "stick" on another file may well be something different.

I agree with Bill about "placing media into the device" as a workaround. My
first time to encounter this error I tried the repetitiously clicking
"Continue," after several (30-40) clicks the scan continued. Unfortunately,
the progress halted again on CMD.EXE and once again prompted to insert a disk
into drive A. As I am "Type-A," I continued clicking the "Continue" button
on each reoccurrence, I found that it seemed to repeat the files it stopped
on two or three times before reaching the end of the scan. All in all, I
clicked "Continue" several hundred times (but I won!!), the scan completed.
Happily, I'm not so "Type-A" that I repeated the process. The next day I
chose to insert media into the drive.
