MsMpEng.exe Uses Computer Resources

At random intervals, MsMpEng.exe will use up to 75% of my CPU resources
according to Task Manger. At the same time Svchost.exe uses up to 13%.

Of course computer runs extremely slowly. I check Defender and there is no
evidence of a scan occuring.

I use Task Manager to end the process of MsMpEng.exe running and everything
is back to normal. Check Defender and it appears to running in the
background.

I've done several uninstall and reinstalls of Defender and eventually the
same problem occurs. Note: Usually the problem occurs daily.

Active protection is Norton Internet Security. Running Windows XP SP2 with
all updates. Defender defindition version is 1.14.1471.6

Any suggestions on what may be causing this? Also is using task manager to
end MsMpEng.exe placing my computer at risk?

Thanks.
