Midway through the shutting down process an error message appears saying,

ccproxy.exe
The memory could not be read.

Why is this happening?
How do I fix it?

Using Norton software?
There's your answer.

Google is a good tool for questions like this. Just do a Google search for
that file; here is one of the links:
http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/ccproxy/

That file is associated with NIS. Personally I wouldn't use any of the
Norton Home security products. I suggest you uninstall it (which can be
incredibly difficult to get rid of completely) and use some of the
excellent, less resource heavy, and less problematic alternatives.

If you want to stay with NIS then contact Symantec Tech support for help.

Can norton errors be any worse than this?

You mean like preventing the computer from booting or Windows from being
repaired or preventing access to removable drives kind of worse?
