Error Message during installation

My computer went through the preparing installation stage and it restarted my
computer. It asked if I wanted to boot with the Windows XP setup and i chose
it. Then it said there was an error that stopped the installation. I closed
the error and restarted my computer then went right back to the same page
where the same message poped up again. What is the problem? How can I fix
it?

What was the specific error message?

Do not choose to boot from the cd after the text phase (what you describe as
the 'preparing installation stage'). Step away from the keyboard. Put the
mouse down slowly. (just kidding).

Just let the message time out and the installer will continue from the hard
drive. You only want to boot from the cd the very first time. After that
the installer puts the files it is using on the hard drive. The reboot back
to the hard drive is part of the installation process and will happen a
couple more times. Let it do its thing. Otherwise you will be in an
endless loop of starting all over again.

the problem says: A fatal error has been ecountered that prevents setup from
continuing. One of the components that windows needs to continue setup could
not be installed. Manifest Parse Error: An invalid character was found in
text content.
Thats what the error message says. What should I do?

Should I take the CD out of the CD-ROM? or what should I do?

Do nothing. Do not remove the cd. Processing will continue on its own.

The message to "Hit any key to boot from cd..." times out in a few seconds
and the system drops through to the hard drive and boots from there. At
that point the installation script starts running again and all is well. It
is only at the very beginning when there is nothing on the hard drive that
you want the cd to boot the system. After that the cd needs to be in the
drive for when the installer needs it, but not to boot any more.

so this error message will go away if I leave it alone? How long will that
take? Its been on there for 3 hours now and its stuck on 49 minutes
remaining for the setup in the background.

You have a bad Windows XP installation CD.
Contact Microsoft for a replacement.

It should have take 10 seconds. Reboot the system without the cd in the
tray. It may clear the problem and continue. Do not start all over. You
can put the cd back in when the installer asks for it. I have not seen the
need to reboot to continue an installation in this way in a long time but
Microsoft does say in the instructions for earlier versions of Windows that
if the installation stops and no progress is seen for several minutes to
reboot.

Maybe Colin wasn't kidding <grin>. You don't have to remove the CD. Just
ignore the message and setup *should* continue booting to the HD. Sorry,
couldn't resist ;-) --Ron
