Error Message- corrupt file or directory

T

trg

I'm getting the following message: Windows- Corrupt file; The file or
directory \$Extend\$0bjId is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the chkdsk
utility."

When I run the check disc utility, it gets into phase two and very quickly
fills the screen with this meassage: "Inserting an index entry into index $0
of file 25." Nothing happens after waiting 5+ minutes so I've turned the
computer off.

I've run the disc check utility selecting the each of the options
separately, both of them and neither of them, all with the same result.

I'm unable to update my anti virus software and I'm getting other error
messages.

Any help would be appreciated.

"I'm unable to update my anti virus software..."

Why not? What happens when you try?

Sometimes, not being able to update protective software is the sign of a
malware infection.

Hi "trg",

Turning off the computer while running Chkdsk should not be done as long as
there is at least occasional disk activity. When running Check Disk on the
system drive during startup, it has to run entirely in RAM without the
benefit of expanded Virtual Memory paging, and it can get sluggish. You
should wait at least 30 minutes after all activity has stopped before
deciding that it is stuck, and then try pressing Ctrl+C to stop it, before
resorting to pulling the plug or off switch. Each stage of Chkdsk has its
own percentage from 0 to 100%, which indicates tasks completed, not
necessarily elapsed time. If the drive is heavily fragmented, and/or has
little free space, Chkdsk can take days instead of hours to complete.
(Keep the computer and drive cool.)

Your primary concern should be protecting any Valued Data on the computer.
You apparently have more than one problem, so it is best to gather more
information so you can make an informed decision about what to do next.
Please include answers to the following questions in your reply:

What is your full Windows version, edition and service pack level?
(For instance, I'm using Windows XP, pro, SP3.)
A__

What version of Internet Explorer is on the computer?
A__

How do you connect to the internet? (dialup? DSL? wired/wireless?)
A__

Is your computer part of a local network? (Workgroup or Domain?)
A__

What is the make and model of computer? (Desktop or Laptop?)
A__

Which drive were you using Check Disk on? (C:)? (E:)?
A__

How old is the drive? (FAT32 or NTFS formatting?)
A__

What other problems have you had before this?
A__

What anti virus software are you using?
A__

Has the computer ever been infected with any malware before?
A__

What other error messages? To properly help, we need complete error
messages, including text that LOOKS_LIKE_THIS, and complete code numbers.
A__

Do you have a Windows XP installation CD? or an OEM recovery partition?
A__

(It is better to include too much information than not enough. :)

What you should do now: Right-click My Computer, click Properties.
Click Advanced (tab). Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings.
Under System Failure, UN-check "Automatically Restart". Click OK, OK.
(If things go from bad to worse, you don't want to get in a reboot loop.)

Important: Download MBAM, update, and run the FULL scan:
FREE MalwareBytes Anti-Malware (MBAM)
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
(It may be necessary to run it in Safe Mode.)

There is some excellent information here:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

If you do not have a good paid AV like NOD32 or Kaspersky, try this:
FREE Home Edition Avast! antivirus - anti-spyware protection
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-free-home-antivirus-antispyware.html

It may be necessary to remove the drive and attach it to another (secure)
computer to get your Valued Data copied. If so, make sure that System
Restore on the other computer is not monitoring your drive.

You should probably keep detailed records of every thing you try, and
please report back here with any progress or solution you discover, so
anyone else having the same or similar problem may be helped.

HTH. (Hope This Helps. :)
