error loading search window and lots of problems with pages in IE

Hi there,

We are having a couple of annoying problems on a Windows XP system:
When we try to open the search window (Start->Search), an empty (except

for the dog) window appears. Also, seemingly at the same time, we have
started experiencing problems with Internet Explorer: Some websites (we

don't know what the 'selection criteria' are, because it happens on
some uncomplicated websites too) don't load at all, and others produce
'display errors' once you start using functions on a page (ActiveX?).
We have tried the following things to solve the problem, but so far
without success:
complete virus scan of the system
complete spyware scan of the system
lowering access/security/authorization levels
registration of several ocx files (hhctrl.ocx etc.)
uninstalled MS AntiSpyware to see if this maybe had created some
restriction
uninstalled Norton Antivirus to see if this maybe had created some
restriction
Also, the Windows firewall cannot be configured, an error message
appears when you try to do this.
Does anyone know where to look for the cause of this problem?

Thanks in advance,

Massimo

Massimo,

Click Start, Run and type:

regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 %Windir%\srchasst\srchui.dll

If that does not help, try reinstalling Windows Script 5.6 from the
following site:

Thanks for your help, Ramesh. I applied both of your solutions, but
unfortunately the problems did not go away. In the end I solved the
problem following the procedures on
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326155:
1. Click Start, click Run, and then type each of the following
commands. Press ENTER after you type each command.
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 msjava.dll
regsvr32 browseui.dll
regsvr32 mshtml.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 vbscript.dll
Then everything ran smoothly again!

Cheers,

Massimo

Glad you got it sorted! It's most probably the missing jscript.dll
registration that causes all the problems. See also:
