error loading os

Fire Dawg

I have had this happen to me twice. When I power up my computer, I get an
error message "error loading os". It happened just a few minutes ago, and
once about a year ago. For some reason, I tried removing and reinserting the
CMOS battery. Each time it did fix the problem. My question is: What exactly
am I doing by removing and reinserting the battery? It works, but why? Do I
need to replace the CMOS battery? Is there a way to check the status of that
battery?
