"Error Loading Operating System"

I have a computer with ME and father-in-law had it so
screwed up that he formated his hard drive. I've bought
the full version of XP. It will re-format and load, but
when it reboots for the first time, I get a message "Error
Loading Operating System". I am out of ideas on what to
do.
