I am having a huge issue with xp pro right now. the other day i ran
ad-aware, spboy, and avast like i normally do. i then reboot to finish
installing an avast update. however upon reboot windows was not able to
load. i would get the normal start sequence until it shows the screen that
has the different drives and system info, then on the bottom it says
something about searching for a floppy boot record. then i get a blank
screen except for the message "Error loading operating system" in the top
right corner. cant even load into safe mode or anything. computer will not
boot from windows xp cd either. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Juvefan,
The hard Drive when start making a grinding Noise, when it start reading the
Clusters and Partitions,so If you hear something powering up,but you should
distinguish between the Cooling Fan and the Hard Drive Noise.
in your case you looks like have a Important data, you should take It to the
Repair Centre, they will be able to hear and see if it is dead HD or Defective
Vedio Card
Good luck

You may need to check the drives integrity with the HD manufacturer's
diagnostic utility.. Who makes the drive ie..Seagate, Western Digital, etc..?
Did you set the jumpers on the affected drive to the slave position, middle
cable connector, same IDE channel as the master, the first connector position
on the cable..?
Another option would be to create a boot disk and get the Active NTFS Reader
for DOS and see if you can recover your data that way..

Hope this can help..

It is a Maxtor drive and according to their utility the drive is failing. I
have tried a couple of file recovery programs, but none have worked so far.
The failing drive is FAT32 but the new drive is NTFS, is that an issue? Is
their a program that can recover FAT32 drives and convert to NTFS?

The issue is a bad (failed) drive that evidently can't be read in windows or
in a dos environment.. What programs have you tried, that didn't work..?
Just being able to copy or move files from the affected FAT32 drive to a
NTFS drive would convert them.. You might see if you could convert the whole
FAT32 drive to the NTFS file system.. See links below and investigate..

sorry if this posts twice, having isp issues today too.

i have tried the following programs

ActiveNTFS reader
R-Studio
GetDataBack
FileRecover
TestDisk

all have failed and all of them give the same errors, error 1 incorrect
function and error 23 cyclic redundancy check, or something similar. i also
ran DiskExplorer For FAT, it showed that there was still info on my drive,
but i was not able to access any of it. i tried to convert the drive to ntfs
but windows said it was unable to read the fat partion. i am beginning to
think i am sol. any other tips? would taking the drive to a pro data
recovery company work? or would it just be alot of wasted money?

I am also having a "error loading operating system" problem.

the XP disk but I can't load it ...............Please help!

Thanks in advance

Search your model # and see if the Dell site has any FAQs for using their
install disks or for problems using install disks, etc.. See if there is a
way to repair the OS installation using their supplied setup disks..
http://support.dell.com/
http://search.dell.com/results.aspx...cs=&k=error+loading+operating+system&x=17&y=7

I have the retail version of XP and it is not exactly the same as what Dell
may provide for their computer systems, in respect to repairing the OS or
reinstalling issues they would be the ones to contact..
