Error installing printer

Sal

I'm trying to install an HP 812C printer on my WindowsXP SP2 system. I
insert the CD that came with the printer and proceed with the install
wizard, but always get an error that Windows couldn't find the
"specified file." What to do?

When it's searching for the driver and can't find it, you probably
have to physically find the subdirectory that containst he correct
drivers. It should say which one it's looking for. Hopefully this
will help.

Hi Sal,

I'm also running an HP 812C on XP PRO.

I didn't even bother with the install CD, and let Windows detect the
printer, and install it's own driver. I'm not lacking any functionality
that I can see. That's the first time I haven't used the manufacturers
driver by choice. I lucked out.

If it is an HP or Compaq computer, or even if it is not an HP computer, you
can download a driver and associated software from hp.com. It may be newer
than the software on your installation CD. After downloading the HP printer
driver, if the printer is connected with a USB cable unplug the printer and
check if it is already installed in Device Manager. If so, uninstall the
printer before installing the new driver from scratch. Then after you
install the new driver shut down the computer. Plug in the printer and cold
start the machine. It will recognize the printer as being a new device and
should use the new driver.

It clearly says __read this first__

NOTE: You do not need to download a printer driver from the Web.
The drivers for HP Deskjet printers are already included in Windows XP.

Those instructions are fine for a new machine but what if HP has updated the
printer driver after Windows XP was installed on your system? In my case on
my currently over five year old HP Pavilion desktop the HP printer driver
was older than the version available on the website. The printer had stopped
working for some reason. I downloaded the newer version and reinstalled it
and the printer started working again. That was over a year ago and I
haven't had any problems since then. There is an "HP Software Update"
application which periodically checks for updated drivers at HP's website. I
have also updated the Compaq scanner and keyboard driver from HP.com.
In the OP's case, if his printer is already working by simply plugging in
the USB cable there is no need to update the driver, I agree. The CD may
have some additional software which may not be needed anyway.

The instructions that I gave are for the HP 812C printer not a __what

printer.

Unfortunately, the OP did not tell us anything about the computer on which
he is installing the HP printer. I am all for saving unnecessary labor and
updates. The HP 812 printer driver may not be included in the version of
Windows XP that is installed on the machine. For example, the HP drivers for
this particular printer may not have even existed at the time Windows XP as
installed. The OP should definitely try just plugging in the printer if he
has not already done so. If the printer works, of course, the proof is in
the pudding.
As far as old drivers versus new drivers is concerned, if it is not broke
don't fix it. I believe we can agree about that.
