It clearly says __read this first__
NOTE: You do not need to download a printer driver from the Web. The
drivers for HP Deskjet printers are already included in Windows XP.

"People say Microsoft paid 14M$ for using the Rolling Stones song
'Start me up' in their commercials. This is wrong. Microsoft payed
14M$ only for a part of the song. For instance, they didn't use the
line 'You'll make a grown man cry'."
Those instructions are fine for a new machine but what if HP has updated the
printer driver after Windows XP was installed on your system? In my case on
my currently over five year old HP Pavilion desktop the HP printer driver
was older than the version available on the website. The printer had stopped
working for some reason. I downloaded the newer version and reinstalled it
and the printer started working again. That was over a year ago and I
haven't had any problems since then. There is an "HP Software Update"
application which periodically checks for updated drivers at HP's website. I
have also updated the Compaq scanner and keyboard driver from HP.com.
In the OP's case, if his printer is already working by simply plugging in
the USB cable there is no need to update the driver, I agree. The CD may
have some additional software which may not be needed anyway.
