error in xp pro upgrade during "installing devices"

About 5 minutes into "Installing Devices", upgrading from
Home to Pro on a brand new eMachines M2150, the computer
monitor turns black and then reboots and starts the setup
all over. The symptoms are exactly described here

But I've looked for the mentioned file and it is not
there. What other file could it be as I'm pretty much
stuck in limbo now, can't go back to Home and can't get
Professional to install...thanks.

Install xp pro cd,then boot to xp cd,you might need to set this in the
BIOS (boot device priority,or similiar),let set-up start,then at info page,
select install xp,new copy,delete whatever partition or os exist,then
create,then let xp format and do a clean install of pro.

Well, I've tried boot from CD but I haven't tried
formatting the drive first...I was hoping to keep that as
a last resort, but it looks like I may go ahead and do
that. Thanks for the reply.
