Error in Outlook 2003 when merging

I used to use my Outlook contacts to merge envelopes with Outlook 2000. Now
that I'm using 2003 (also Word 2003) I keep getting error messages.

The first screen that pops up is a "file conversion OMM1E" and it defaults
to Unicode. If I click "ok" on this screen it will go to a Word merge page,
but it will only let you start a new merge and then if I pick Outlook
contacts as my data source it tells me it can't find "SCHDMAP1.DLL" and I
can't complete the merge. If I pick my personal address book then it merges
every address in my contact list, not just the ones that I highlighed in
Outlook. I found a page at MS that said they were aware of this problem?
Anyone know if a fix is on the way or is there a workaround for the interim?

Thanks.

What steps are you using to perform the merge? For best results, you should start in Outlook by highlighting the desired contacts, then choose Tools | Mail Merge. You will not need to select recipients again later.

I am using Outlook. I hit Tools | Mail merge with selected contacts
highlighted. I used to do this all the time with 2000, but since I upgraded
I haven't been able to use it. I get the messages listed in my first post,
first regarding the file conversion and then "Cant find SCHDMAP1.DLL". I
found one item on the MS website indicating that this was a problem, but I
can't really find any other information or assistance.

Thanks.

Your first post isn't entirely clear about what point in the process that you getting that error and doesn't tell us all the options you're selecting in the first merge screen. It would probably be helpful if you walked through the process step-by-step and explained what error is occurring after what step.

What symptoms indicate that you can only start a new merge?

Sue,

This could be a long one:)

1) Choose contact and highlight it
2) Click Tools|Mail Merge
3) Choose "Only Selected Contacts" , "All contact Fields", "New Doc" and Doc
Type "Envelope" then "OK"
4) A screen pops up "File Conversion-OMM2D". It defaults to "other
encoding" with Unicode as the choice. Click "OK" (If I choose Windows or Dos
it just looks like gibberish and won't work.)
5)Two blank Word docs pop up. The one in the foreground has a toolbar and
the one in the background has no toolbar.
6) A message pops up "doc has been prepared...press setup in section 1 of
MailMerge helper dialog", Click OK
7)MailMerge helper opens with ONLY Main Doc as your option.
8) Choose "Create", choose "envelope"
9)Data Source then becomes available. Click "Get Data".
10) Use Address Book, choose "Outlook Address Book" as my data source
11) A screen pops up that says "this file needs to be opened by the Outlook
Address Book text converter...choose yes if you're sure it's from a trusted
source", Choose "yes"
12)A window pops up "A required file 'SCHDMAPI.DLL' could not be loaded.
Please check your email installation and re-install MS Word if necessary"
(which I did).
13) If I choose "Personal Address Book" it will merge ALL of the contact in
my Outlook address book, not just the one I've chosen at the beginning of
this whole mess. Otherwise it just stops at the SCHDMAPI.DLL message and
won't go any futher.

Thanks for your help.

I figured out a workaround solution for this problem if anyone else
experiences the same thing. You must have a Word document open in the
background. Then, choose your Outlook contact(s) and follow the merge as
usual. Two new Word docs will open at the bottom of the screen. Click on
the last one to open (which will be Doc 3 since you have one already open)
and continue with your merge.
