Error, cannot assign resources to Game Port

Yesterday I needed to add a joystick to my computer that connects to the
MIDI/game port on a sound card. I disabled the sound that is built-in on my
motherboard so that only the sound card would be using resources instead of
both the onboard sound and the add-in sound card (PCI bus). The sound card
is recognized fine and functions OK, but the game port is unable to be
initialized because it is stated that there is not enough resources for the
game port to be allotted any resources, and this error message also happens
when installing the drivers for the card itself rather than relying only on
the drivers provided by the operating system (Windows XP).

When opening up Game Controllers in Control Panel and then selecting 'Add',
I am told that the game port or its drivers are not functioning or not
installed and that that needs to be done first. Of course that makes sense
because in Device Manager it is stated that resources cannot be allocated to
the game port on the sound card.

I would like to know if this is a Windows XP issue because of there not
being support for the older-style game port compared to USB and Firewire, or
if this is no more than a glitch or bug. The motherboard has the NVidia
nForce-2 chipset.

Hoping for some insight,

Thank You,

P.S. My address is different from when I got this Passport ID, and I write
it out at length here due to the automated address scanning that happens in
newsgroups. It is the word 'Lifes' and the word 'graces' and then the 'at'
character and then 'sbc' and then the word 'global', and then the period and
the word 'net'.

Hi Kirby,

To determine if the issue is hardware or Windows XP dependant
try using your joystick in DOS mode with the drivers provided with
the gameport device. Personally, I replaced my gameport joystick
with a USB model to avoid the type of problem you're describing. :)
