Error after installing XP SP 2

After installing XP SP 2 on my laptop, I received an
error on a blue screen informing me that Windows was
shutting down to avoid damaging my computer followed
by "Stop: 0x0000007F" I was instructed to run a memory
check or delete any new hardware, software or drivers. I
would like to do either or both, but don't know how. Step-
by-step instructions would be great.

The laptop is a Compaq Presario R3240US with an AMD 64
Athlon processor.
