Hi all,

I received the following error message when i run the command ipconfig
/renew on Windows XP system.

"An error occured while renewing interface local area connection: Access is
denied."

I run the command using Domain admin but yet still get the same error
message but i still able to get the dhcp ip after few minutes.

Anyone, please advice any possible cause that will bring up this error
message.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Robert,

Thanks for the reply. I found the error occur because of the
misconfiguration on the core switch.

Seem like the client DHCP discovery packets was broadcast to another vlan
and rejected by the DHCP server.

Thanks.

Thank you for the update. I saw another similar post like yours. I should add it to my database.

Hi Robert and all,

In fact i shall apologies to all as i have posted 2 questions that related
to the same issue.

First, I post a question regarding slowness in getting DHCP address. Second
is I getting this error message when I type “Ipconfig /renew†command.
Honestly, at first I can’t think of any relation between the two. I’m still
new in Windows administration.

I install a packet analyzer and notice the DHCP request patent is a bit
abnormal. I received a fix patent of NAK reply from the vlan that not
supposes to reply to me. My guess will be the DHCP request has been broadcast
to all vlan and the DHCP server actually rejected the DHCP request from the
wrong vlan. I have no knowledge in 3com switch, what I can do is to request
the network engineer to remove the IP helper address from the vlan that not
require DHCP relay agent(those vlan reply with NAK) and solve both of the
problems.

I believe the root cause is because of misconfiguration on the network
switch but I’m not able to confirm anything because my network knowledge is
very limited. I wonder is that really a need to configure IP helper address
on every vlan in one core switch? I solve the problem by removing the IP
helper address from the core switch, but I wondering what happen if one of
the vlan require DHCP relay agent? I will have the same problem again.
Something is wrong on the network configuration. The network engineer is not
able to provide me any reply. Hmm, look like I need to pickup the network
knowledge in deep if I really have to find out the root cause.

Anyway, thanks to all.
