I know the cable is working fine since it works with my desktop.
Also, the modem on the laptop connects to the internet via dial-up
perfectly. It appears that there is some sort of firewall/? on my
computer that does not allow me to communicate with the internet. Does
the following information contain anything obvious that I could correct
to enable the DHCP server.

Thank you. -John

Cable modems are starnge beasts. The Motorola devices our local cable
company uses comes up as either a NAT router or a bridge, depending on what
it sees. If you boot the thing with a device connected, it is a router. If
you boot it without anything connected it is a bridge (and DHCP is passed
through. Only one Public IP Address lease is available).

On your desktop, start a CMD session and type "ipconfig /all". Post the
results.

Dear Zebulebu,

Hello. Thanks for your interest. I am on a Home LAN- comcast
cable routed to an RCA box and then to the ethernet. It works just
fine for my desktop but not for the laptop. Perhaps I am missing some
crucial software.

Take care,

John

Dear Kurt,

Hello. Thanks for your interest. I posted my ipconfig /all result
in my original message (it is below the ipconfig /renew result). Today
I went to the library to get a networking book to try and decipher the
results of the ipconfig /all command.

Take care,

John

Dear Kurt,

Hello. Below is my ipconfig /all results. I read that I need to
disable my IP autoconfiguration in Windows 2000 by editing the
registry. I did this last night but my autoconfiguration is still on
somehow. Do you have a clue what I need to do? Would it be helpful to
reinstall the operating system? Thank you, John.

Hello All:

I am having an almost identical problem with a wireless PC card from
microsoft (MN-720).
I don't think it is card or system specific. It was working for over a year
absolutely fine.
My troubles started when I uninstalled Symantec NAV (liscence expired) and
installed the "free" suite from my ISP (F-secure). Connection was working
but seemed to drop or be very slow all the time. Frustrated with this I
assumed it had something to do with F-Secure (used to use it a corporate
environment with many challenges by backweb). That's when it got worse.
Could not get IP assigned, couldn't renew etc. I did some searching and
read somewhere that Symantec NAV leaves tid bits behind when uninstalled
that won't let go - so to speak. I went through Add/remove programs -
Add/remove hardware (hidden devices) and the registry and removed anything
that looked pretty much like symatec or NAV. - Reboot - No joy.
Reset the router, reflashed the router with firmware update. - Reboot - No
joy. Downloaded and ran Winsockfix.exe and it worked very briefly and then
disconnected and the NIC actually shut itself down. Treid to reboot but, -
no joy. I can't help but feel there is a registry snafu, and reinstalling
Win2K might be the only way to deal with it. I sure hope not, but I've
spent every evening this week f******g with it, and a few more hours of
installing Windows is almost looking good. It's pluging back the 5 dozen or
so updates and patches I dread.
Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Group,

Hello. In addition to the Autoconfiguration problem I learned that
a cable modem needs to be turned off before switching the ethernet
connection from one computer to another (IP address issue). I was
switching from my working desktop to the nonfunctional (in terms of the
internet connection) laptop. Powercycling the cable modem solved my
connectivity problem.
