DHCP unreachable

Any knows why I would get this error message "DHCP server unreachable"
while trying to run ipconfig /renew in the process of installing a
router? DHCP is running.

Sometimes, ipconfig /release does not actually release the IPs. Is this
connected in someway?

Hello John,

If you have ISA running then this article has some information regarding the
cause:

287673 The Packet Filter Does Not Enable the Renewal of an External IP
Address
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=287673

If you do not have ISA, then it is probably not a good idea to do the renew
while installing a router.

Hi Mohanchand,

Thanks for the reply. No, I do not have ISA. If I cannot do a renew, how
do I set up access to my router ? I do have its IP address but I have no
idea what DNS I should then enter.

have you tryed recling the power to the router? also if this is the first
setup to it, you might need to set a static ip and access the routers
webconfig screen to set up the dhcp. this is also common on wireless
routers. once you set the router to serve dhcp you should be able to change
the client back.

Yes, I did recycle the power. This indeed is the first setup and I did
manage to enter the setup screen of the router by entering its IP and
any DNS (not knowing which ones to enter). But the problem is that I
have very little knowledge on how to setup the router (SMC Barricade,
very complex for a layman in networks like me) and am running in
circles...I would like to solve one problem at a time and cannot
understand why I was once able to /release and /renew and that now, I
cannot even /release my ethernet card...

hmm... there might be something wrong with it in itself. i have heard about
problems creeping up with the smc routers from friends that have used them
in the past. if you know someone that is a little more familier with routers
maybe they can give it a look. one guy i just talked to claims he has to
reboot his every 4 days or so. does any computers have access to the dhcp or
is it one or all of them giving this issue?

I found a way out of this: once I secured the DNS servers of my ISP, I
entered my router configuration setup by entering manually its
connection IP and the DNS I found. My Internet connection worked
immediately after activating DHCP in the router. I was then able to
revert my LAN settings to fully automatic and now my two computers share
the connection using DHCP.

A lot of trouble because I originally stuck to the manual which
prescribed using DHCP to access the router without given any alternative.

Now, I'll have to try to active the Wifi link...another headache but
less urgent.

Thanks for trying to help.

Bottom line:
