Error 1606

D

Don S.

Hi
I installed IE 7 and got into troubles.
One of the last ones is the fact that my Palm Pilot does not Hot Synch.
Going to Support.Microsoft KB or Q 315352 it tells me that the problem
relates to some incorrect registry setting or entry.
Note that I had no troubles till I installed IE 7.
In the instructions on Registry fix, it tell me to go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft|Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders and then to double click on Common Administrative Tools.

Well --- I got to the last point but I DO NOT HAVE the "Common
Administrative Tools" file in my XP.

I am running Windows XP Pro 2002 with Service pack 2.

Any suggestion on where to go to get a direction to fix this.

Thanks

Don

Don,

What's the exact error message? It could be a different shell folder also.

Hi Don S.,

A fix that appears to solve the error 1606 problem is to d/load, install and
run the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=290301
Once the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility has been run, try
uninstalling/reinstalling the Palm software to the same folder in which it
was previously installed.

Don,

Type this in Start, Run:

cmd /k REG QUERY "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders" /v SendTo

It's a single-line command. Copy the output and include it in your reply.

You need to inspect the "SendTo" shell folder path in the registry.
See here for defaults: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/usershellfolders.htm

Hi Patty

I did this as well -- but still no joy.
I deleted the Palm installation via the Installer, installed Palm Desktop
from the Palm website (Palm Desktop 414) it again, but it still will not do
the Hot Sync.
Any other suggestions? I will try to do it again tomorrow.

Thanks

Don S.

Is it HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE or HKEY_CURRENT_USER which is shown in the output?

Forget about "Common Administrative Tools".

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders

Sendto Reg_EXPAND_SZ %USERPROFILE%\Sendto

So -- what now?
