Error 1606

I upgraded from ME to XP and have had problems with some of my software,
specifically, Acrobat and Palm. I can get either of them to work and when I
try and reload the Palm sw I get error 1606 network could not access network
location ::\document and settings\default]SendTo. I'm not very technical and
don't know how to fix it. Any help would be appreciated.

The shell folder registry data for "Send To" may be incorrect.

Click Start, Run and type:

reg export "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders" "%userprofile%\desktop\shellfolders.txt"

Note that it's a single line command. Watch for word-wrap.

After running the command, the file "shellfolders.txt" will be created in
the Desktop. Attach the file with your reply.

The SendTo shell folder data is correct. Can you check if you're able to
access the Send To folder using the command below:

%userprofile%\sendto

Also, make sure that the Palm software which you're installing, is
compatible with Windows XP.

Thanx Homer. The link you sent explained the problem I was having after I
upgrades Windows from ME to XP. However, when I did regedit there was no
Common Administrative Tools. There was AppData, Desktop, Documents,
Favorites, Programs, Start Menu, Startup and Templates so I couldn't fix it
that way. Any other suggestions>

Thank you for contacting Palm Technical Support. My name is Clem and I will
be assisting you in addressing the Palmâ„¢ Desktop Software re-installation
problem you are encountering. I understand that you are receiving “Error 1606
could not access network location"\documents and settings\Bill Cronin|SentToâ€
upon un-installing the desktop application for your Tungstenâ„¢ T3 and you
would like to know how to resolve this problem.



I realize the importance of your issue and look forward towards providing
you with an appropriate resolution.



This particular error message is usually caused by a conflict with the
startup program loaded in your computer or a previous version of Palm Desktop
Software is interrupting the installation process. You will need to disable
the startup items and services before installing the Palm Desktop Software.
To address this problem, you may consider the following steps.



Down load the Microsoft® Installer CleanUp Utility.
Backup your user data folder.
Make sure no Palmâ„¢ Desktop Software is installed your computer.
Delete all palmOne, handspring, palm folders and registries.
Copy the contents of the CD to the desktop.
Run msconfig application and disable startup items and services, which
interfere with the proper installation of the desktop application’s
components.
Restart the computer.
Reinstall Palm Desktop Software from the desktop.
Enable all startup items.


First you need to download the Microsoft Installer CleanUp Utility from the
link provided below. This software will ensure that all Palm related files
were removed from your computer’s operating system.

Then, make a backup copy of your user data folder because upon un-installing
Palm Desktop Software, it will delete every data on the palm folder including
all your data. Proceed with the un-installation and re-installation of Palm
Desktop Software.



Please follow the steps on how to backup your user data from Palm Desktop.



Ensure that Palm Desktop is closed
Double click on the My Computer icon
Select the C: drive
Double click on the Palm folder to open it
Right Click on your User folder (Note: your user folder may be a truncated
version of your username) and select Copy
Minimize the current open windows
Right Click on an empty part of your Windows® Desktop and select Paste


Now, use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to remove Palm Desktop
Software.



Run the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility file you downloaded.
The Windows Installer CleanUp Utility will create a folder here: C:\Program
Files\Windows Installer Clean Up
Open the folder. You will find an application called Msicuu.exe.
Run the Msicuu.exe application.
You will see window listing various third-party applications.
Select Palm Desktop in the window and click on REMOVE.
The Utility will remove all the registry entries of Palm Desktop from your
desktop computer.
Restart your desktop computer.


Please follow the steps on how to find and delete all Palm files.



Double click on My Computer
Double click on Local Disk (C
Double click on Program Files
Right click on the Palm folder and press Delete.


Copy the contents of the Software installation CD into a folder named
“Installation CD†on the desktop of your computer. Make sure to change the
folder view option to show all files in order to copy even hidden files.



Insert the installation CD.
Exit the splash screen and open My Computer.
Create a new folder on the Desktop of your computer and name it
“Installation CDâ€.
Go to (D CD Drive.
Click on the Tools menu and select Folder Options.
Click on the View tab folder.
Under hidden files and folder, select “show hidden files and foldersâ€.
Click on Ok.
Click on one file in the CD and go to the Edit menu and click on Select All.
Press Ctrl + C to copy.
Minimize the window and right click on the Installation CD folder and select
Open.
Press Ctrl + V to paste.


Now, launch msconfig application and disable startup items and services.



Click on Start button.
Click on Run.
You would see Open and on the space provided for type in “msconfigâ€
On the System Configuration Utility window, click on Startup tab.
Click on Disable All button.
Click on Apply, click on Ok.
System Configuration Utility would prompt user to restart computer.


Remember to restart your computer to ensure that the changes take effect.
You may reinstall Palm Desktop from the copied file on your computer and
essential software after restarting your computer by launching the “Setupâ€
application. Make sure that during installation, you use the previous user
name that you used from your previous installation. Please follow the steps
below on how to restore your user data files.



Open the user folder you pasted in the desktop.
Look for Backup folder. Right click and then delete. This will delete
previous third-party applications in your handheld; you may install them
again using the original installer.
Close the window. Back to your desktop, Right click on your user folder,
click copy.
Open My Computer.
Click on drive C:\
Open Program Files then, Palm or palmOne
Right click on a blank part of the window, click paste, if prompted to
overwrite click Yes.
After you’re done, open Palm Desktop Software to see if you have
successfully imported your data. Perform a HotSync to restore the data to
your handheld.


Lastly, you will need launch “msconfig†application again and enable all
startup items and services

I solved my problem. I went to my local technician and had him install XP
from scratch and all the problems went away and everything that didn't work
before, works perfectly now. I would strongly suggest people not upgrade
from ME to XP.

I sent earlier. Hope it works for you.

Nope. I'm still working on it. I might just go to my local repair guy
and
have in install XP without the install and pay him to do that, since none
of
the solutions that have been suggested worked so far. If you get it to
work,
will you please let me know, and I'll do the same.

I upgraded from ME to XP and have had problems with some of my
software,
specifically, Acrobat and Palm. I can get either of them to work and
when I
try and reload the Palm sw I get error 1606 network could not access
network
location ::\document and settings\default]SendTo. I'm not very
technical and
don't know how to fix it. Any help would be appreciated.
