Say a little more?

Are you on a corporate network?

What happens when you go to Windows Update, do an Express scan, and apply
all offered updates?

I have attempted the various suggestions to "cure" the update problem I'm
having with no sucess. My opinion is that this product is defective and
Microsoft needs to fix this problem.

Another opinion I have is that, I'm pretty old and have never in my life
owned another appliance/tool/toy that requires as much time devoted to
routine maintenance as a computer does.

Doris,

Though I understand your concern and actually feel your pain, I have to
wonder why you are using a Beta application? These are inherently unstable
and problematic, by the very definition of 'beta'.

In your case, I believe you'd be better off looking at the Windows OneCare
product which is designed to aid with PC maintenance and protection. It is
also currently in the beta stage with a planned release date in June. I
wouldn't suggest you attempt the beta, but the following page gives links to
a Product Overview and other info.

'course, current OneCare versions--1.0.970.4 interface with Windows Defender
and should offer it as a download--not sure when this happens, but I'm
looking at long-installed versions in an office I admin, and they have moved
to the version which "includes" Defender.

Bitman,

Thanks for your suggestion regarding OneCare. I've tried it twice and my
computer exhibited problems that went away when I uninstalled that program.
I do want to simplify routine upkeep of the computer and believe that the
creator of Windows (I'm using XP MC on a four-month-old Gateway desktop)
should be in an advantageous position to make this happen for ordinary,
non-technologically inclined computer users.

I didn't use Microsoft's first Anti-Spyware program, because I didn't want
to try a Beta. However, I heard and read that the program worked well and
thought I'd give Defender a try as one part of my layered protection. I
can't say that the program doesn't work, since I haven't used it for very
long. The real problem is in my not being able to easily keep the
definitions up to date, or to know for sure whether or not Defender's
definitions are current.

Doris,

Although Defender is a 'Beta 2' product, it's internally quite different
from the original AntiSpyware application, including how it updates. This
created new bugs that didn't exist in the original version, but also includes
a stronger core engine and interface simplification. The development pace is
slower then many would like to see, but hey, it's a beta and [will remain]
free.

I didn't really ask, have you solved your own update issues? What are your
symptoms if not and what have you tried?

Bitman,

My update problem is not yet resolved. I've decided to not do anything
further and see what happens when the next update is issued.

Thanks,

I think I can answer that.

Though my machine was working well with MS AntiSpyware I was directed via a
VERY prominent and vigorous graphic on Microsoft's website saying I should
update to Defender.

Even though it is a Beta I have never had any problems before with Beta
software from MS particularly those deemed 'Beta 2'.

This particular release is a disgraceful show of poor planning and even
poorer coding skills. From what I can gather the Beta 1 version actually
worked which is more than Beta 2 does on my machine.

Apparently, since my machine uses Dynamic Disks, Defender scans but bugs out
after a few minutes. I had big troubles trying to install it and had to redo
it a few times to fix another bug, the one that causes users to get stuck in
an 'update loop'.

Basically, MS, threw us all into Defender and now they have a BIG mess to
clean up.

Defender is the worst thing I've seen from MS for a while.

It does appear they've created a rather stupid public relations blunder. The
specific issues I've seen, including those you've mentioned, appear to be
limited, but to continue the current versions distribution with these known
issues makes no sense.

I'm betting they'd become overconfident with the success of MS AntiSpyware
Beta and failed to realize the drastic nature of the changes included in
Defender. I'm not aware how large the Defender Beta 1 release was, but it
seems at least the looping update issue should have been evident.

None of the issues I've seen is really directly harming anyones system, but
you'd have thought that an engine update to fix the dynamic disk issue could
have been released by now. I believe I heard the updating problems require a
new GUI.

I've been fortunate and had none of these issues on the few installations
I've done.

Bill,
I just did that and nothing changed. I (not the original poster) still get
the Ox error.

I am NOT on a corporate network. This is a home network on adelphia.net. The
definition version is 1.14.1353.2 dated 3/23/2006. After reviewing MSFT
responses on the group, I tried using the scan button in the toolbar and
that works.
Thank you

So--this is a scan error--that's my mistake then--I was assuming an update
error.

I strongly recommend todays update--which was the link I gave--but don't use
that link, just go to help, about, and hit check for updates.

There's an engine code update today which may well help with issues like the
one in this thread.

There's new engine code in todays update--have you tried scanning after that
update?
Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1051.0

Engine Version: 1.1.1303.0

Signature Version: 1.14.1353.2

B

Bill Sanderson

Hmm-OK--can you confirm:

1) Go to Help, about, and see whether what you see matches this:

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1051.0

Engine Version: 1.1.1303.0

Signature Version: 1.14.1353.2

2) Can you give replication steps to get that error message--what do you do.
step by step?

Yes, my suggestion was to aid in the maintenance aspect, not solve the
Defender updates problem, since this would still exist.

The update sweep to the 1.0.970.4 version of OneCare must be close to
completing, since most waiting have indicated they now have it. I understand
that it prompts to install Defender if it's not already installed as both
mine and your's was.

This initial attempt to bring Defender into view through OneCare allows
update status and manual Quick Scan along with Reminers On/Off. The Yellow
alert status for notification of new Defender Detection Updates is a bit
glitchy though. I chose to allow Defender to autoupdate during last night's
scheduled scan, but OneCare was still flagging this as needing to be done
this morning. Entering Microsoft Update through the Defender Update alert
button seems to have cleared this status.

I'd rather they spend time on more important issues with Defender or the
full integration of Defender into OneCare myself, since workarounds for such
a glitch are likely to be messy.

In any case, Sandy Miller has posted elsewhere that yesterdays code update
has cured the scan issue.

I'm not clear whether any update issues are solved or not--time will tell.

I have yesterday's Defender update. The update was automatic, quiet,
required no contortions on my part, and I'm satisfied so far.

My most recent installation of OneCare included Defender but not the up to
date version. I uninstalled OneCare because of protests my computer was
registering, but I hope to eventually try it again.
