Windows 7 Error 0x80042302

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and tried to back up to a external HD but I get a error message that back up was interrupted with error 0x80042302 . Any help with this would be appreciated, I have tried Googling this but not much help there.

Win 7 can repair itself, you may have to reinstall some software, but data should not be lost ... your mileage may vary.

Found loads of errors so I threw in the towel and had to complete a clean reinstall of Windows but now up and running (just)
