erratic mouse behavoir

During any given day, I may use up to 6 different computers, all of which
have Windows XP. Each computer has problems with erratic mouse behavior. Of
the 6, 2 have optical mice, while the others have traditional "ball" type.
All are connected through USB ports and have updated drivers.

I describe erratic as: jumping across the screen, not moving at all, will
move up/down but not to the sides, etc. This is present on ALL systems and
ALL mice. I also have access to a Windows 98 system and have tried these mice
on that system without problems. This sounds like a Windows issue to me, but
has anyone got any suggestions, since I could grow old while trying to use
this thing!

Install the latest drivers designed for the computer's video card.
