Eratic mouse operation

I have a new XP system. It has a wireless mouse. Regularly the mouse
pointer will fly off eratically, and I have to move the mouse around to get
it controlled. I thought the mouse was the problem, so I installed a wheeled
mouse. It acts in the same manner. What action can be taken to fix this
problem?
