Equations in Word 2002 SP2

I am able to create and edit equations as long as I do not save the document
they are in.

When I reopen the saved document and try to edit the equations, at the first
change the equations shrink to an unreadable font size and they show as a
horizontal line of a few pixels. I can still grab the box and drag it to a
new bigger size but then the font size/spacing is screwed up and I am unable
to make the equation match the surrounding text font size.

This is extremely annoying as all equations have to be retyped when changes
occur.

What is going on????????

Please make another post to the newsgroup and tell us what
version of Word you're using. Although the subject line says Word
2002 SP2, we need more information that that. Open up Word, and
in the Help menu, click on "About Microsoft Office Word" or
"About Microsoft Word" and give us the version number from that
screen. For example, mine says "Word 2003 (11.6359.6360) SP1".

We also need to know the version of Windows. If you're using
Windows XP, let us know whether or not you've installed SP-2.

Thanks for taking an interest,

OS: Windows 2000 build 2195, SP4
Word 2002 (10.4524.4219) SP2

I expected Word 2002 SP2 to uniquely identify the version of word!

Thanks for the info. Let's do one more thing, if for no other
reason than to eliminate the obvious. Open up Equation Editor,
and click on Define in the Size menu. The default settings are
(from top to bottom) 12pt, 7pt, 5pt, 18pt, 12pt. What are yours?

version of word!

Logical expectation, but the way Microsoft sometimes releases new
patches without changing the version number, this is the only
real way to tell what patched version you're using.

After checking I see that for a new document the equation size settings are
the standard values 12,7,5,18,12pts (top to bottom).
The font styles are Arial, Arial, Arial, Symbol Italic, Symbol, Symbol,
Times New Roman Bold, Arial (top to bottom).

Recapping here, after the equation has shrunk at the first editing attempt,
checking the object formatting shows a size of normally 4%, 4%.
Resetting to 100%, 100% brings the equation back including the edit that
caused the shrinking to happen, but the object size is then found to be
anything between 96% and 107% (height and width are not the same). The
equation formatting is obviously not as it should be as, spaces particularly,
seem to have dissappeared.
Resetting again to 100%, 100% seems to stabilise the values at 100%, 100%,
all the spaces reappear and the formatting then looks as expected.

Saving this new edited and then corrected file, reopening the file and
trying to edit the equation again then results in a shrunk equation of a few
screen pixels as before.
