Equation Editor

Half an hour of using equation editor has left me a bitter
and broken man. If it can't actually do anything well,
can I at least turn off the error message that keeps
popping up? The message is:

"Equation Editor's MT extra font is not available. Some
characters will not display or print. Re-install equation
editor to properly install its fonts."

I'm using a public computer and don't have the word disc,
so re-installing it is not an option.

Alternatively, there must be a better way to do this.
Does anyone know of a good shareware or freeware program
to insert mathematical symbols into documents? Thanks!

You can insert many mathematical symbols using Insert | Symbol, but the fix
for EE is not terribly difficult. Here's how Design Science's Bob Mathews
explains it (take these instructions to the person responsible for
maintaining the computer you are using):

My main recommendation is to download and install the 30-day
evaluation version of MathType -- the professional version of
Equation Editor. It's available at the link in my signature. It
will solve the problem you describe, and will be usable beyond
the 30 day trial period, though with many features disabled. If
you'd rather not go this route, read on...

The brackets are formed by a font -- specifically the font MT
Extra. We have 2 articles on our web site that deal with this
problem. I'm thinking the first one will solve the problem, but
if it doesn't, then you should look at the second one too. Here

If going through those procedures don't work, then do this...

1. Go to Control Panel | Fonts and delete the font MT Extra.

2. Close the font window.

3. Repeat steps #1 and #2 until there is no entry for MT Extra.
(This is necessary because some applications install their own
version of MT Extra, so you may have more than one installed,
although only one will show up.)

4. Download and install the MathType fonts from
http://www.dessci.com/en/dl/fonts/.
