Epson Stylus C46 Page Count

Lecron

I have an Epson C46 which is about 2yrs old it was working perfectly
yesterday then came up with a message that it needs to be serviced after
that it wouldn't print anything. My local store has told me that the printer
has reached its "page count limit", and that I should buy another printer.
Is that good advise?

Hi Lecron, there is a very good utility available for Epson printers
here:

http://www.ssclg.com/epsons.shtml

This utility will reset the page counter in your printer. More
instructions on using this software is here:

http://myprinter.altervista.org/simplefaq/mysimplefaq.html#counter

Note that there have been mixed reports with this software, some people
have no problems but others can't get it to work at all.

The most important point is to replace the waste ink pads inside the
printer after resetting the counter, other waste ink may build up and
leak out of the printer.

See James' post.
The utility should do the job.
Waste pads can be replaced or even washed out and dried if you are prepared to
do the work. In my experience you can safely neglect to clean or replace the
waste pads this once but next time you get the message they must be done to
avoid ink overflow. I have seen dozens of this series of printer and whenever
this message appears we always check how full the pads are, they are usually
about 40% full and so we save our customers some money by resetting the
protection counter and warn them that next time they are up for a pad clean or
repair.

I'm rather interested to know about how much printing one can do before this
message first appears. I realize that it varies and could be depenedent on
the number of head cleanings as well as the number of sheets of paper
printed, but assuming there are minimal head clogs associated with the
printer because one was printing everyday then does anyone have any idea
just how much printing one could do before the first warning would appear?

The protection counter does not seem to have any relationship to anything
obvious. Of course the Epson engineers will know how it is calculated but I
have never come across any information that would help.

Your printer has reached its ink protection number where Epson estimates
that the printer's waste ink pads are saturated. As I recall the C46 is
a dye ink printer, probably meaning that over the last 2 years a lot of
the ink components have already evaporated.

Unfortunately, I do not have this particular manual on hand, so I cannot
provide the front panel presses to cancel this.

However, go to:

http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml

And they may have the reset built into their program (which is a free
download).

There is no fast answer to this, unfortunately.

The ink protection numbers are programmed into each model and it is
unique. It is dependent on the type of ink, amount of ink used in the
cleaning cycles, and replacement cartridge porgies, size of the waste
ink pads...
