Does the Epson R300 have 6 separate cartridges or is it one black and one 5
colour cart?

Just read previous postings and got my answer, another thing though do the
cartridges have the chips on that imply it empty before it's actually ran
out?

All current Epson printers have the chips. There is extra ink in the
cartridge for your protection.

Protection???? I have had a Stylus Photo 750 for years and always ran the
carts until dry with no ill effects, still prints good to this day.

All Epson and -almost all- Canon inkjet printers have still a little ink
left in the cartridges after run out. It needed because of printer design.

I have a Epson 750 and always reinsert the cartridges after it tells
me the ink is out. I probably get another 30% of use out of them this
way and there have been no ill effects from running them dry. 30%
waste is a bit excessive don't you think?

I would guess so, but, when my printer warns me at 20% I don't change
out, I run it till its less than 5%

I suppose we talk about the average user. You aren't an average user you are
experienced, e.g. you never leave an empty of ink printhead for most than a
couple of days, do you? It's the main reason for the most epson dead
printers in the world.
On the other hand you replace the cartridges, even if they have 30% more
ink. Because you know if the printhead get air, you would need some cleaning
cycles that it balances the gain you will have.
