Epson CX5400

I did not use my Epson CX5400 for about three months, and when I tried using it
again the colors all print fine but the black doesn't print hardly at all!! The
ink level indicates that I still have 20% of my black ink supply and all others
are over that, so I don't think I'm out of ink. It was printing fine when I
left it shortly after Thanksgiving.

I have run the head cleaner three times and done the nozzle check several times
with no particular improvement. On the nozzle check the color lines are sharp
and clear but the black is spotty and weak. I have ordered all new ink
cartridges just in case, but they won't be here for a week.

Meanwhile is there any way I can clean the heads/nozzles manually without
damaging anything? (That's one thing I like about my HP printers - new
cartridge, new head!)

I was told by my friends when I bought this printer (about 2 years ago) that
Epsons were notorious for this sort of thing if they were not used regularly but
I have left it before for a couple of months at a time and had no problem.

Thanks in advance for any help!

First thing to do..
Drop Arthur Entlich a email, you'l find Arts keyboard tappings up an
down these pages and request his cleaning instaructions explain wha
is happening

e-printerhelp(@)mvps(.)org

remove the brackets leaving no spaces

As the previous post suggest one common fault is the waste tube tha
connects under the docking area, it comes off and you'll get n
cleaning action at switch on or during nozzle cleans

Spy this clear tube, switch on or do a nozzle clean if the tube i
intact and hasn't come away you'll see the ink gurgling through th
tube to the waste pad

or.

Get a pencil and feel the tube near the docking end if there's th
slightest of resistance then it can be assumed the tube is intact, i
however there is no resistance and is easily lifted or flaps abou
then it has come away

When it comes adrift it will usually affect all the colours and no
just one, do seek Art out first it may save you a lot of hassle

Your story is common, and it is usually more about the inks Epson uses
in the C and CX printers than anything else.

Durabrite inks, as used in your 3 in 1 printer, are waterproof when dry,
use pigment colorants and are good for offices where rapid dry printing
is required. They are also very cheap to acquire, although the ink is
another story.

For detailed instructions on how to clear your printer of this problem

Hi, Glad you got it working, was just a little curious what the caus
was

What you need do is keep it printing every two or three days even i
its only a small web page.

What I usually did, sometimes it works with clogs and sometime
doesn't, is to draw squares or circles in MS Word and fill them wit
the problamatic colour and print at a high resolution - firing on al
cylinders if you will, it cures the odd clog saving wasting the othe
colours, obviously with a tri-colour cartridge saving ink is
littler more difficult compared to seperate tanks
