Epson CX4600 printer won't print-nozzles clogged?

Hello,

My parents have an Epson CX4600 (all in one unit with
scanner/copier/printer). They recently changed the Black (T0441)
cartridge. The status monitor reports the other cartridges are empty. I
know for a fact they aren't. When I shake the yellow, magenta and cyan
carts, they have plenty of ink. I tried the status print and head
cleaning operations. However I can't get those functions to work
because the ink light remains lit no matter what. Is there another
cleaning procedure for the ink nozzles or heads that can be performed
so that my parents don't have to spend $40 for 3 new color carts?

Thanks.

This is a common problem with Epson printers and sometimes one that you
can't get around. What you have described is a flaw of the CX4600 (and
possibly other Epsons) that you can't do a whole lot about. If you
haven't already, what you can try is completely resetting your printer:

Theoretically this clears the printer's memory and when it comes back
on, it should recognize the correct ink levels in the machine.
Unfortunately, if you are still locked out after a full reset, then
there isn't much more you can do. I wouldn't recommend buying new
cartridges for this printer, though. Either complain to Epson so they
send you a new one (actually not that hard to do if you get a hold of
them over the phone) or else just cut your losses and buy a Canon or
HP.

Even if you don't use color printing often, the printer still uses the
color ink when printing greyscale, or running cleaning cycles. If your
monitor says that the cartridges are empty, it won't let you print
until you change them.

Yes, Epson printers say 'Empty' too soon. They settled a recent
lawsuit about this out of court. www.epsonsettlement.com to see if you
qualify for a partial refund.

Still, you do NOT want the printer to run dry. You can get a chip
resetter to make the printer use all of the ink in the cartridge, but
if you do not catch it in time (which is difficult, since the resetter
will put it back to 100%, and not stop it once the ink really does run
out), the printheads will burn out if the ink runs dry. Your best bet
would be to buy new cartridges. Otherwise you risk damaging the
printer.
