Hello everyone. Well this is my first time posting on here I believe but it
will probably not be my last.

Well I have an older computer (2001) that has Windows XP Home Edition (it
works fine for me right now as i have external memory and I'll buy a laptop
later this year). In any case I need to transfer video from my DV camcorder
to my computer so i can edit some vacation footage. As instructed I purchased
a IEEE 1394 Firewire PCI Controller Card and Firewire cable. I physically
installed it and insert the drivers disk to install it on my system.

However in the middle of the software install wizard, an error message pops
up and says "The file enum1394.sys on Windows XP Home Edition CD-ROM is
needed....Type the path of where the file is located and click OK." In the
field it has pre-inserted 'c:\i386'. Of course the file is not there so if I
click OK it just gives me the dreaded "yeah, that's not gonna work" tone. I
went into that location manually to search for the file and it's not there.

I am assuming somewhere along the lines that file got removed or wasn't
there in the first place. In any case I don't have a XP disk as it was
pre-loaded into my system when i bought it (I could possibly be wrong about
that but no matter what I don't have the disk). So I'm stuck. I've googled
and yahooed an evening away trying to find somewhere I can download this
missing file to no avail. And I need it to continue. I'm thinking of setting
my computer on fire and dropping it from a tall building into a mass of fire
ants, gang violence, and thorns but I don't think that will help with my
problem.

Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

Open Windows Explorer and in the C:\Windows folder, look for a
folder by the name of Driver Cache. In this folder is an i386
folder with the driver.cab file. Unzip the driver.cab, extract
(i.e., copy) enum1394.sys to a known location, e.g., C:\Unzip.
When asked for this file, designate the location where it was
placed (e.g., C:\Unzip). That should take care of it.

Good luck.

enum1394.sys *should* be in C:\windows\system32\drivers

If it's not there, it's in C:\i386\Driver.cab and you'll have to expand it.

Thanks guys however I still can't locate it. I found the i386 under Drivers
Cache. However there was no drivers.cab file (no.cab file at all and i didn't
see anything that was zipped). I even did the F5 as that link instructed and
it did refresh however it still did not show up. I also looked under System
32 Drivers but the closest i see to anything is 1394bus.

I also did a full search of my computer for "1394" to try to find anything
and I found enum1394.pnf which i could not open and another that was just a
text file. But that's about it.

THanks for the help, any other ideas?

Although it is compressed, drivers.cab is a cab file, not a zip file.

You found C:\Windows\Driver Cache\i386 and didn't see *any* cab files?
Are you configured to show hidden files and folders and NOT hide
"protected operating system files"?

What service pack are you running? If you are at service pack 3, there
should *at least* be sp3.cab (if not also sp2.cab and sp1.cab). If you
don't see *any* of these cab files in C:\Windows\Driver Cache\i386
there's something peculiar going on.

Try doing a search for driver.cab. Make sure that you turn on the
options to search system folders, hidden files and folders, and in
subfolders.
