Enough Protection?

In my Vista Basic, I have set the Windows automatic updates and do check from
time to time that is working ok. I also have NIS2007 installed and updated.
Just wonder if these are sufficient to protect my pc from all the infections
that are floating in the internet. Thanks

Technically no. Someone could write a new program in 5 minutes to hose your
system. In practice, it probably is sufficient.

You could think of it like a big lock on your front door. Is that completely
sufficient to stop every conceivable burglary attempt at your house? Clearly
no. Is it likely to be sufficient to deter most casual burglars. Probably
yes.
