How do I number endnotes by chapter giving separate chapter headers?

If you are putting the endnotes at the end of each chapter, you can suppress
the Endnote Separator and insert a heading at the end of the chapter before
the endnotes begin. If you're putting all the endnotes at the end and
restarting numbering by chapter, there's not really any good way to do this,
I think.

It's too bad Word doesn't offer a way to start numbering at 0 for footnotes
and endnotes as it does for pages. If it did, you could insert an endnote 0
at the beginning of each chapter, hide the endnote reference mark in both
the document and the endnote, and use Chapter X for the endnote text,
formatted as desired.

You might try this, though. In a limited trial, it works for me. Use the
Home key to position the insertion point to the left of the endnote
reference mark in the first endnote in a chapter. Press Enter. If you're
lucky, this will give you an empty paragraph (I expected an error message
but didn't get one). You can type anything you like in it and apply the
desired style. This method survives a Print Preview, so presumably it would
work.

Note, however, that even if you apply a heading style to the chapter
headings in the endnotes, Word will not "see" them. That means that they
can't be included in a TOC or picked up by a StyleRef field in the header of
the endnotes section.

If a Zero endnote would work--then starting each chapter with a custom
mark endnote that holds the Chapter Heading should also work. The custom
marks bypass the numbered series. Never thought of that before--thanks,
Suzanne.

See my later post for an even simpler solution. I started to email you about
it and then realized that we had tried this before and discarded it as not
useful (at least not for the OP in the case) because the headings can't be
made to appear in the TOC.

"0" did not work for me; but a custom mark did. I wish I could position the
endnotes where I want it to be, say before the references. Is there some way
of moving this text around?
