Endnote Troubleshooting - HELP!

I'm having a dickens of a time. I have 12 chapters of a book. Each has its own endnotes. I need to put them into one document so I can do a table of contents and an index. Then take it to Quark. Here are my problems

When I insert the next chapter -- for example, I have Chapter 1, now I insert the file, Chapter 2, into the document. I have set up a Style that has Chapter Number -- with a page break before. This should make it a section, right? The end notes for Chapter 1 disappear from Chapter 1 and end up at the end of Chapter 2. If it doesn't make it a section break, WHERE do I put the section break, so that my end notes don't 1) end up in continuous order (i.e., section 2 endnotes are numbered sequentually from section 1, etc.) and 2) stay formatted correctly?

I need to finish this BEFORE 3/21 -- therefore, I need the answers NOW, sigh.

TIA, Tere

Hi Tere

If the only reason you're creating one big document is to create a Table of
Contents and an Index, then you may be better off re-thinking your method of
working.

Put all your chapter documents in one folder. Create a new document in that
folder called, say, TOC. In that document, insert RD (Reference Document)
fields, one for each chapter. To do that, do ctrl-F9 and type between the
brackets Word gives you. You need to type so it looks something like:
{ RD "c:\\my folder\\Chapter 1.doc" }. Note the double back slashes.

After you've done all your RD fields, insert a TOC and an Index into that
document. It will produce a TOC and an Index for all the documents you
referenced using RD fields.

There's more in Word's help about RD fields.

Hope this helps.

A page break is not a section break. You'll need to insert section breaks
(Insert | Break: Section break: Next page), then make sure that the endnotes
are set to appear at the end of the section rather than the end of the
document.

Hi Tere,

Page break before does NOT make it a section, you need to insert a Section
Break. That makes it a section. See here for more info:
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Formatting/WorkWithSections.htm

Then, you want to set endnotes to come at the end of the section--via the
Insert menu, you might have to click on Options to get to the formatting of
notes, depending on version. In the same place, set endnotes to restart at
each section, if you want each set to start with 1. Click Close or Apply
rather than OK to exit without inserting a new note.

What do you mean by "stay formatted correctly"?

By format correctly, I mean it needs to have the numbers restart. (I realized after I hit send that I forgot to say: XP! for my version of Word.

I had found the "Work with Sections" on my own, and have been trying it. I got the second chapter to work correctly, but the first chaper does NOT have the end notes at the end, they are at the end of Chapter 2, and immediately following them are the endnotes for Chapter 2, and the numbering restarted. I know I'm on the right track, but I'm still doing something wrong. Any idea WHAT

I'm really beginning to LIKE Word's Styles, BTW.

Either you don't have a section break between Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 or you
have endnotes suppressed for Chapter 1.
