End a task

An e-mail asked it could send a "read" notification to the sender. I clicked
Yes. After that, I deleted the message. Now, I get a recurring SEND/RECEIVE
dialog box that says the task cannot be completed because there is no
recipient. I've tried to "Cancel All", to no avail. When I click the task
under the tasks tab, the "Cancel TAsk" button is grayed out. I emptied the
Deleted messages folder, so the original message is gone. Question: how can
I get this task to stop, so I stop getting the Send/Recieve error dialog box?
