Empty Response from MS FrontPage Extensions...

Carl Fenley

I've lost some functionality that I once had, and I believe it is due to a
service having been disabled or set to manual.

I used to be able to copy files from one location and paste them into the
folder list within FrontPage. Now, when I attempt to do that, I receive the
following error:

"An error occurred accessing your FrontPage web files. Authors - if
authoring against a web server, please contact the webmaster for this
server's site. WebMasters - please see server's system log for more
details."

The only entry, that I know of, exists in the Application log:

Event ID 1000, FrontPage 4.0, Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions:
Received empty response from Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions.

I can copy and paste files into the exact same folder using an Explorer
window, and I can even paste them directly to the appropriate folder under
wwwroot, and all that works fine.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Are you copying or importing non-htm or non-image files into _hidden folders?
If so, it's a known problem w/o a fix
Try copying them into a non-hidden folder

Try copying them into a non-hidden folder

It's not a hidden folder, but after some new experimentation; I've found it
has something to do with file size. Again, this must be a new limitation.

If I create a new folder called 'files' in the Folder List, then copy
'cc2-20b.exe' (742 KB) from an Explorer window; I can successfully paste
that into the 'files' folder in the FrontPage 2000 Folder List.

If I zip up manual.pdf into manual.zip (2.97 MB) and copy it from an
Explorer window, I get the previously mentioned error upon attempting to
paste it into the 'files' folder in the FP2K Folder List.

The same error occurs if I use the Import dialog from the File menu within
FrontPage 2000. I have two Windows 2000 Pro computers, both have FrontPage
2000, and both exhibit the exact same behavior.

I know this used to work because the file that is in the 'files' folder is a
2.6MB Zip file, and I'm sure I pasted it into that folder within the Folder
List because I am a creature of habit and that's the way I've always done
it.

Having said all that, I'm not dead in the water because I can paste the
files into the appropriate folders using Explorer, but I'm one who likes to
understand why things that once worked, no longer do.

Any further help is greatly appreciated.

That's a different problem
Yes, some (yet to be identified) recent Windows or IE SP or patch has made it impossible to import or copy any files over 1MB into a
FP site

- Locally Windows Explorer is the only workaround
(run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks when you reopen the site in FP)
- Remotely you may have problem publishing w/ files over 1MB
(create an small "dummy" file w/ the same name before publishing, and then after publishing use a 3rd party FTP to replace the
"dummy" file w/ the real larger file)
