Empty Folders

I am using Windows XP with SP3 and all recent updates. Also AVG antiviral
program and have 4 partitions on my hard drive with one used exclusively for
programs.

Recently I noticed that almost all my folders were empty in one partition
and encountered only one empty folder in an another partition. Otherwise the
computer is running well without any problems. Using Acronis I reverted to a
backup I had done on Feb 20th wondering whether some recent update or SP3
had caused this problem, but the folders are still empty.

Is there any way to remedy this situation or recover the information and
does this indicate a hard drive problem? Corrupted software? How can an a
person run chkdsk on a partition?

Hoping to solve this dilemma.

"Recently I noticed that almost all my folders were empty..."
Depends on what the folders were. (Literally all?) List a few examples.
"How can an a person run chkdsk on a partition?"
In "Explorer" right click on a drive letter and select "Properties". Open the "Tools" tab
and click the "Check Now..." button.
Check the first box only, the second one will take a very long time.

Among the many folders, I had overlooked the fact that a new folder *New
Volume-1* had been created in the same partition F with a copy of the entire
contents and folders of F where the information was intact. This left many
empty folders behind. There was a variety of files which went "missing",
many of them graphic files like TIFF, GIF, JPEG and movies but there were a
lot of Word and Access database files.

Any ideas as to the cause. Would an update have done this? AVG, Ad-Aware and
Spybot did not find any malware. Like other things, this perhaps cannot be
explained.
