Hi,

After typing in my password, I log on and my desktop
remains literally empty (blue screen), with no icons, no
task bar - nothing.

However, I can still run my applications by invoking the
Task Manager and using the File / Run menu.

Is there something, somewhere, that tells Windows to load
the desktop and its contents and that would be corrupt on
my machine ?

Thanks,

Bob

Just to complement my description of the problem : this is
under Win 2000 Pro, on a DELL laptop.

Looks pretty much like what I'm experiencing.

Have a dummy question though - I'm not an expert :-( :

The article refers to a file located in the %SystemRoot%
folder. What folder is this ?

Thanks,

Bob

Indeed!

%systemroot% is an environmental variable (because it is
surrounded by % signs). You can see all of them by
typing this at a Command Prompt:

set

or

set systemroot

or

echo %systemroot%
