Embedded Objects in Word 2003

When viewing a doc that has embedded objects or when I try to create a doc
with these (ex: Excel Tables, pics, links, etc) the object does not appear
just a white box. However if I double click in the box it for me to edit it
and when I close out it reverts back to the white box. Can anyone assist me
in what I need to do?

Tools > Options > View > Uncheck 'picture placeholders'
