When I try to embed (or link) to a one page pdf file, I get an Adobe logo
displayed, nut no text shows either in print preview or when I print.
Toggling beween alt f9 either shows the "embed field coding" or the Adobe
logo. What is wrong?

There's nothing wrong. That's how it works. Word has no filter for PDF. The
link will open Acrobat to view the document.
Word allows the insertion of all kinds of objects that don't print - eg
sound files.
If you want to insert the content of the PDF, you will need the full version
of Acrobat, a third party conversion utility or compatible OCR software.
