embed a multiple page file

I am trying to combine 2 word documents into a single doument to be saved as
a pdf. The first is a cover letter type document (1 page) and the second
would be 3 page document. When I embed the second document, it only appears
to get the first page. I would think that it should be all three pages along
but it's not. What am I doing wrong? Should I not be using the embed
functionality

I would use PrimoPDF to combine the two separate Word documents into a
single .pdf file.

You're using the "insert object" command, and objects in Word cannot cross a
page boundary. What you should be using is the "insert text from file"
command. Probably you have Word 2007, where both commands are on the
dropdown menu from the same button. If so, click the triangular arrow next
to the word Object on the Insert ribbon, and choose Text From File.

Thanks Jay for the response. Both documents are word 2007. I did try to
insert text from a file but it does not retain the original formatting and my
3 page document expands to 4 pages. Any way to retain the formatting?

One or two additional steps are necessary.

- If the documents have styles with the same name but different definitions,
they're in conflict and Word chooses to use the one in the receiving
document. Shauna Kelly's article at
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/styles/FormatOfTextChanges.html discusses
this for the case of copy/paste. When you're inserting a document through
Text From File, it's better to rename the styles in the document being
inserted, so there is no conflict.

- To retain different margins, headers, page orientation and the other stuff
in the Page Layout options, insert a section break at the end of the text
that's part of the receiving document. Go into the header and footer of the
section after the break and turn off the Link To Previous button on the
Header & Footer Tools tab of the ribbon. Close the header/footer and insert
the second document after the section break.

One other thing to note: If your page counts are based on looking at the
document when different printers are selected, it could be due to a
difference between the printer drivers
