Embed linked graphics

New user to Word 2007 (Office 2007, SP1).

In Word 2003, I could break the links to ALL linked graphics at once and
make them embedded by selecting the entire document (CTRL+A), then going to
Edit > Links, and selecting the Save Picture in Document check box.

In Word 2007, I select the entire document, click [big Microsoft Office
button] > Prepare > Edit Links to Files, and find that only the FIRST file
listed is selected, not all of them. This means I have to scroll to the end
(and there could be a few hundred graphics in a large document), do
Shift+Click to select them all (Ctrl+A doesn't work in this dialog box), THEN
select the Save Picture in Document check box.

I Googled and found that you can't see the file path of a linked graphic
with ALT+F9 if the document was saved in *.docx format - to fix that, you had
to save it in *.doc format and then it worked. Well, that's the same for this
'select all' functionality. If I save the document as a *doc file, then do
Ctrl+A on the document, then MS Office button > Prepare > Edit Links to
Files, ALL the linked files are selected. But if the document is saved as
*.docx I only get the FIRST one listed selected.

Is this a known issue? I can't find any record of it in the KB, and the
forum post where I found the 'save as a *.doc' tip is more than 12 months
old. (Forum post here:
http://help.lockergnome.com/office/Edit-Links-Dialog-Word-2007-ftopict998604.html)

Is there any way to get this functionality in the *.docx format? Or do I
have to switch between formats to do this task?

If you don't have any other fields in the document, you could unlink the
pictures with Ctrl+A, Ctrl+Shift+F9.

Hi Rhonda,

The link you posted (one of the web site 'slurps' [clones] from
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.word.docmanagement ) <g>
is pretty much still true (i.e. MS doesn't consider it 'broken' just a new behavior.

Office 2007 has a new graphics engine, 'OfficeArt' nee Escher2. In Word there are features from both the new and old (Escher1)
engine mixed in, and that can make things work differently and by using the compatibility choices and file formats you can somewhat
control which features are active in given situations.

If you save in .docX/.docM with compatibility (to Word 2003) active or in .doc format, Word turns off some of the 2007 features and
uses the prior version behaviors instead.

Objects/graphics that are 'inline with text' have always behaved differently than items that are wrapped, and the settings in
Office Button=>Word Options=>Advanced=>Cut, copy, and paste
can play a part in that.

When you're working with the .docX/.docM format Word's default behaviour is to use the new feature set. With the new feature set
Edit=>Select does not see the 'new' graphics objects, but in
Office Button=>Prepare=>Edit links you can select multiple links at once then break them for graphics that were linked via
Insert=>Picture(from file)

If the graphics are inline with text then Ctrl+F (Find) can still locate and highlight graphics (^g) as with earlier versions.

That wouldn't work for these docs. Some are hundreds of pages long with lots
of TOC, TOF and in text cross-references. To send the doc to another person I
need to break the links for the linked graphics and embed them.

I actually have a macro to do this, but was trying to document the manual
process for someone else. Doing the CTRL+A thing before opening Edit > Links
(ALT+E+K) was a neat solution I found some years ago - it meant I didn't have
to manually select all the graphics on the Edit links window.

It looks like manual selection of these linked graphics in the is the only
option now in Word 2007 *.docx format, OR saving as *.doc. It's a small thing
and there are workarounds, but losing functionality always seems like a step
backwards to me.

Thank you for you help.
