Email troubles, please help before the laptop gets it!

We have Windows Mail running on Vista - all new to us. I'm used to Outlook
on XP. When I go from one email folder to another, say Inbox then to one
called Dawn, it takes a long time, sometimes its instant but rarely.
Othertimes I could go and put the kettle on! I thought it was me not using
the laptop mouse properly but hubbies havn't same issue and he's used to
them. Also, The number of ne wemaisl is displayed in brackets next to the
folder name, when they've been read I'm used to the number changing or going
away, but it doesn't appear to. Any tips anyone please?
